Main Circuit Breaker: What It Is, Where to Find It and Other Important Things You Should Know
As a homeowner, there are a myriad of things you need to know and keep track of. We’re here to help. When it comes to the electricity supply of your house, there are a few things you need to be aware of. First, it is vital to always contact a qualified electrician if anything is wrong, as electricity can be very dangerous. Second, you need to know the basics to help you troubleshoot if something happens, and the basics start with the main circuit breaker.
What is the function of the main circuit breaker?
The main circuit breaker is a vital device – one can go as far as to say it is one of the devices that makes modern living spaces (homes, buildings, etc.) possible as we know them. Electricity has become an essential part of our lives, but if unchecked, it poses a number of risks, including fire. The main circuit breaker does just that – if there is a surge in current, it cuts the power flow.
Where do I find the main circuit breaker?
The main circuit breaker can be found on the electrical service panel board, also known as the DB board or distribution board – a large flat panel with a row of trip switches. If you have a prepaid electricity meter, this is usually situated next or close to the DB board. These switches should have labels. The main circuit breaker is typically the largest switch and if labelled, should say “Main switch” or sometimes “Mains”.
What do I do when it trips?
Simply flick the switch back up to re-establish the connection. If, however, the switch keeps tripping, you should contact a qualified electrician, as this could be an indication that there is a bigger underlying problem that needs to be located and addressed.
Where can I find a replacement?
Switch Electrical Supplies is a wholesale electrical distributor and supply store in Gauteng, and stocks all top electrical products and leading brands.
